Elmira: At the age of 91, passed away on December 21, 2014 in Elmira. Walter was born in Stamford, CT on March 9, 1923, the only son of Walter R. Hayter, Sr. and Minnie Reuter Hayter. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Catherine Beckwith Hayter. He is also survived by his sons and daughters, Robert (Gail) Hayter of Avon, CT, Alan (JoAnn) Hayter of Victor, NY, Susan Hayter of Charlotte, NC, Kathleen (Don) Bighinatti of Cromwell, CT and Donna (David) Hilfiger of Charlotte, NC; eight grandchildren, Kara (Colin) Paquette, Alicia (Ramzi) Alkass, Jeffery (Heather) Hayter, Kathryn (William) Mattson, Christina (Brett) Caldwell, Vanessa Bighinatti, Michael Bighinatti, Michael (Lynn) Hilfiger; and 4 great-grandchildren. Walter received a BS degree from the University of Connecticut and a MS degree from the Stevens Institute of Technology. He served in the U S Navy in WWII. He was employed by Westinghouse Electric Corp as a Product Design Engineer for 42 years. Walter was a member of the Seneca Power Squadron achieving the grade of N. He was also a member of Park Church for over 50 years. Besides enjoying his family and their successes, he took great joy in summers spent on Keuka Lake (50 years) and sailing his many sailboats. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., Park Church, 208 W Gray Street, Elmira. Military Honors will be accorded outside the church following the service. In lieu of flowers those wishing may remember Walter with a donation to Park Church.
