Stanley T. Augustine Age 86, of Horseheads, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Bath VA Medical Center. Stan was born on March 24, 1926 in Elmira to the late John and Johanna (Sepanik) Augustine. He is survived by his wife of 63 years M. Elaine (Davidson) Augustine; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Donna Augustine, Clarence NY; daughter Patricia Augustine Kreitzer, Horseheads; four grandchildren, Megan (Nick) Ercole, Ryan Augustine, Jillian Kreitzer (fiancé Nicholas Aho), and Nathan Kreitzer; great granddaughter Brooke Ercole; sister Clara Moya, Phoenix AZ; sister-in-law Jean Davidson of Elmira; along with several special nieces and nephews. Stan was predeceased by his two brothers, Walter and Chester "Butch" Augustine and brother-in-law M. Bates Davidson. Stan was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944 and served in the South Pacific. Stan was awarded numerous service medals including the Purple Heart for wounds he received at the battle of Iwo Jima. After being wounded he was taken off the island and was able to witness the iconic raising of the American Flag from his ship. Stan worked as a mechanic for 35 years with NYSEG before retiring in December of 1987. He was a member of the Elmira Heights American Legion Post #154 and the White Eagles Club. In earlier years Stan was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed the years he was able to spend at his hunting cabin in Chemung. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W. Water and Walnut St. on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, June, 13, 2012 at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Casimir's Church. Military honors will follow the funeral mass. The Augustine family would like to extend their sincere thanks to special caretaker Debbie Troccia for the wonderful home care she provided and to the staff of the Bath VA Community Living Center for their loving and attentive care given to Stan over the last 3 years.
