Richard Hutchings "Dick" Smith Elmira: Age 75, died very unexpectedly on Sunday, November 14, 2010. Dick was born January 5, 1935, in Corning, the son of Richard H. and Mina (Nichols) Smith. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Miriam Charlap Smith; children, with their families, Jeffrey C. Smith of St. Petersburg, FL; Mark H. and Kelly Smith of Elmira, with children, Abigail, Ethan, and Carter; Miriam K. "Kristy" and Carl Kanaskie of Harrisburg, PA with daughter Katherine; sisters and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Milton Brackman of Painted Post, Marian B. Smith of Corning; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Allan G. and Barbara Charlap of Elmira, with son Aaron; special friends, Jim and Sue Cordier of Horseheads; along with several nieces and nephews. Dick was an engineer for Corning Glass Works, retiring after 44 years of service. His job took him to all parts of the world, and his world travels extended into his retirement as he enjoyed traveling with Miriam to different countries. An avid golfer Dick was a member of the Corning Country Club. He also enjoyed playing euchre and bridge with a close circle of friends. Dick was well known in West Elmira for his daily walks with his beloved German Short Haired Pointer, "Addie". Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W. Water and Walnut Sts., on Thursday, November 18, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, November 19, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Casimir's Church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Dick with a donation to either, SPCA, Route 352, Elmira, NY 14903, or The Dominican Monastery, 1310 W. Church Street, Elmira, NY 14905.
