Richard Monahan

April 15, 1941 — December 11, 2015

Age 74, passed away at home on Friday, December 11, 2015. Dick was born in St. John, New Brunswick Canada. He was a son of the late Dr. Richard O. and Agnes (Flewelling) Monahan. He was also predeceased by his twin sister Patricia Wetzel. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Joan Wagner Monahan; children and their families, Shawna M. and Wade Townsend of Burke VA with children, Zack, Kacie, Devin and Ryan; Kelly L. and Steve Belloma of Elmira Heights with sons, Dante, Dre and Tyler; Michael R. and Julie Monahan of Horseheads with children, Kegan and Pyper; brother Gerald and Sue Monahan of Hillsboro NC; sister Rosemary Monahan of Stow MA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William Wetzel of Briar Cliff Manor NY, Richard and Annie Wagner of Las Vegas NV, Peggy Wagner of Stockton CA; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Dick was a graduate of Norte Dame High School and St. Bonaventure University. A U S Navy veteran he was a graduate of Officers Candidate School in Pensacola FL. After completing flight training in the Pensacola area he was stationed at Lakehurst Naval Station, New Jersey. Dick completed two deployments on the USS Shangri-La and the USS Saratoga as a Rescue Helicopter Pilot. He owned and operated Taylor Rental Center – Monahan Party Rentals in Horseheads NY. Upon his retirement Dick spent his time "puttering" around what the family affectionately refers to as "the farm". An avid hunter he was a life member of Fir, Fin and Feather. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, December 18, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mary Our Mother Church, 816 Broad Street, Horseheads NY. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will be held at Woodlawn National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers those wishing may make a donation in Dick's memory to St. Mary Our Mother School, 811 Westlake Street, Horseheads NY 14845 or Erin Volunteer Fire Department, P O Box 29, Erin NY 14838.
