Richard J. Mandell

October 26, 1946 — November 13, 2022

Elmira: Age 76, passed away at his home on Sunday, November 13, 2022. Rich was born and raised in Elmira a son of the late Michael A. and Catherine (Noterfonzo) Mandell. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law Theresa A. and Charles Jung and brother Daniel J. Mandell.


Rich is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Michael J. and Joan Mandell of Elmira, sister-in-law Rosalee Mandell of Elmira; along with several nieces and nephews.


Rich was a 1966 graduate of Elmira Free Academy. He enlisted in the U S Marine Corps in 1967, serving nine months in Vietnam where he earned a Purple Heart. While in the Marine Corps, Rich was stationed in Long Island for most of 1969. During that time, he was able to attend almost all the New York Mets baseball games and, as a result, became a life-long fan. Rich was at Shea Stadium when the Mets won the 1969 World Series. Upon his honorable discharge, Rich moved back to Elmira, attending Corning Community College. He went to work for the U S Postal Service for several years before moving, briefly, to Florida. He returned to Elmira and worked for at the Elmira Correctional Facility, from where he retired. Rich enjoyed weightlifting from his teenage years well into his senior years.


Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial for Rich on Monday, November 21, 2022, 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 224 Franklin Street, Elmira. Interment, with committal prayers and military honors, will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery
