Mary Katherine Young

Age 92, passed away peacefully at Elcor Health Services in Horseheads on Saturday, September 17, 2022. Mary was the youngest of six, born June 16, 1930 in Elmira, daughter of Edwin and Margaret Sullivan Lyon. She was predeceased by her son Bruce Young; granddaughter-in-law Kara Young; brothers, Connie, Ed, Jack , Bill and sister Margaret. Mary is survived by sons, Ryck Young with Bridgett Kingsley, and Randy Young; daughter and son-in-law, Gaynor L. Young-Pierce and Dennis Pierce all of Elmira; grandchildren, Brent Young with children Trey, Mary Katherine, Elizabeth, and Jake …. Ryan (Stephanie) Young with children Tyler and Kylie …. Carlye (Matthew) Trickett with their children Abagail, Madeline and Alex …. Katy (Nicholas) Lucarelli ….Jessica Martenez…. former daughter-in-law Debbie Young; along with several nieces and nephews.

Mary had many vocations, but her biggest achievement was the co-creator of Youngs' Tennis and Ski with 30+ years of business. The business enabled her to show her true love of creating a store to buy not only ski clothing but clothing to be active in for any season. She made it possible for young and old to get to the ski areas with ski programs where some years there were 10 buses leaving from Elmira on the weekend. Mary also worked and traveled for Beconta, Inc., a ski company that brought products like Nordica and Fulsap clothing to the US from Europe. As a retiree Mary used her love of art and people to become a docent at Corning Museum of Glass. There she took great joy in learning about glass and meeting visitors and artists from all over the world. Her other volunteering was commitment to others with the ACS Reach to Recovery program, and Cornell Cooperative Extension master gardeners' programs. Taking up golf later in life, she enjoyed her golf rounds with friends and took great pride to share with us that "she got the ball over the water today at Willow Creek." Mary loved to gather family and friends and will be remembered for her farm parties and the Lyon gatherings by all.

Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira NY, on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 5:15 p.m. Burial will take place at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery at a later date.
