Elmira: Age 89, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. Mary Fran was born in Elmira, the only child of Thomas A. And Martha (Nash) Cowley. She was a 1959 graduate of Pennsylvania State University receiving a degree in journalism, and in 1977 received a Master of Science in Education degree from Elmira College. Mary Fran had various jobs over the years. She was a copywriter for S. F. Iszard Co., an assistant in public relations at Skidmore College, and from 1968 until her retirement in August 1996, she worked for Chemung County where she was a Senior Probation Officer. Mary Fran was a founder and past president of Family Debt Counseling, past president and long-time member of the Ladies Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and for many years served as a lector and eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Church, where she was a long-time communicant.
Mary Fran was a strong, formidable, and confident woman. She often hosted delicious dinner parties for her friends. She enjoyed good company, lively conversations, and a good glass of wine. Mary Fran also enjoyed local theater and music events with her friends. She will be missed and remembered by all who knew her. Rest in God’s Peace, Mary Fran.
Mary Fran’s services will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at St. Mary’s Church, 224 Franklin Street, Elmira. One hour of visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment, with committal prayers, will then take place at St. Peter & Paul’s Cemetery.
