Mary Ellen Maycumber

Age 85, passed away after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, October 31, 2022. Mary Ellen was born in Elmira, daughter of Raymond S. and Stella Cherkis Conklin. She was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, William L. Maycumber, Sr.; son William L. "Billy" Maycumber, Jr.; brother John R. Conklin; sister Margaret Jean Mehalick.

Mary Ellen is survived by her children and their spouses, Mary Catherine and Kevin Barrett of Horseheads, John Maycumber, James and Kimberly Maycumber all of Elmira, Ann and Michael Moss of Big Flats, Teresa Pfuntner of Pine City, Jennifer Maycumber with Phil Guinn, Amy and James Samuelson all of Elmira; sister and brother-in-law Ann and Joseph Chalk of Elmira; sister-in-law June Conklin of Elmira; brother-in-law Andrew Mehalick of Maryland; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary Ellen was a 1955 graduate of Elmira Free Academy. She had worked as an operator with New York Telephone for several years before raising her family. Mary Ellen enjoyed reading, knitting and listening to the Chemung County Public Safety scanner. If anyone needed to find out what was going on in the community all they needed to do was call Mary Ellen.

Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church, 224 W. Franklin St, Elmira on Friday, November 4, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery.
