Liverpool NY: Age 96, formerly of Elmira, passed away peacefully Monday, August 25, 2014 at Elderwood Health Care in Liverpool, surrounded by the love of her children. Marion was born in Elmira October 14, 1917, the daughter of Bertram and Nellie (Suffern) Newman. She is predeceased by her husband G. Leonard Merrill and three brothers, Lee, Ed, and Bob. Marion is survived by her son and daughter-in-law John N. and Nancy Merrill of Liverpool, daughter and son-in-law Linda M. and Tom Mansfield of Burlington VT, grandson Kristopher Merrill and his wife Dana with their children Keely, Shea and Colin. She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. Marion was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy and Elmira College. During World War II she worked with the American Red Cross at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. Her career in Human Services took her to various agencies in the area. Marion served on the Board of Directors of Binghamton State Hospital, an appointment made by the Governor of New York State. While in Elmira she also worked for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. "Mem" will always be remembered as one of the most unselfish, caring, and fun-loving persons you could ever hope to know. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira on Friday, August 29, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. A service will follow at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Betsey Crimmins officiating. Interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Those wishing may remember Marion with a donation to the Chemung County Humane Society, Route 352, Elmira NY 14903.
