Age 94, of Elmira, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. Margaret was born in Elmira, the daughter of Leo J. and Carmen (Newcomb) McCarthy. She is predeceased by her brothers, Robert, William, James and R. Hugh McCarthy, nephew Richard H. McCarthy, Jr., and niece Madeline McCarthy Miller. Margaret is survived by her sisters-in-law, Ellen McCarthy of Clearwater FL and Donna McCarthy of Milford DE; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Margaret was a graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing. After earning her nursing degree she entered the U S Navy, where she would serve for 27 years, retiring in 1971. Upon returning to Elmira she became an active member of the Ladies Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Ladies of Charity, and the American Legion Bentley Post #443. Margaret was also a member of the St. Joseph's Alumni Association, the Navy Nurse Corps Association and a life long communicant of St. Mary's Church, Elmira. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m., St. Mary's Church, Elmira. Interment, with committal prayers and military honors, will then take place at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Those wishing may remember Margaret with a donation to either, St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, 555 St. Joseph's Blvd., Elmira NY 14901, or St. Mary's Church, 224 Franklin Street, Elmira NY 14904.
