Margaret Louise (Wooster) Carter, age 104, passed away on September 12, 2023, at Chemung County Nursing Facility after a long and full life. She was born in Towanda PA, the daughter of Almon and Louise (Miszler) Wooster. She graduated from St. Agnes School in Towanda as the valedictorian and went on to graduate from Elmira Business Institute in Elmira. In November 1938 she married Raymond F. Carter. Together they had five children, Mary Tanski of Glastonbury CT, Daniel Carter (who died of illness at age 6), Elizabeth Carter of Hanover MA, Regina Farmer with husband Thomas of Pine City NY, Christopher Carter with wife Susan of Hilton Head SC; grandchildren, William (Suzanne), Peter (Chloe), Raymond, Stephen (Jennifer) and David Tanski … Paul, Melanie and Priscilla Tanger … John Farmer (Allison), Elizabeth Farmer (husband Jon Daher), Christine Farmer (husband Simon VenShtain) … and Daniel (Maya) Carter; along with 14 great grandchildren.
Margaret and her family spent 17 years in Parkersburg WV before returning to the Elmira area. In Elmira she worked for many years at the NYS Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and later at the NYS Psychiatric Institute before retiring. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and visiting family up until his passing in 1993. Margaret was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and was known as the “Bread Lady” for the Lenten fish fries. She enjoyed playing her violin with The Elmirans Band. Margaret had been a communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Catholic Church of Horseheads, NY.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, 224 Franklin Street, Elmira on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Skin Cancer Foundation at www.skincancer.org.
