Kara M. Young

June 24, 1973 — August 29, 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kara Mekos Young on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at 48 years of age. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family who adored her. Kara is survived by her loving husband Brent Young; three beautiful children, Mary Katherine, Elizabeth, and Jake. She also leaves behind a large family including her parents Joseph and Marilyn Punzo Mekos; brother Aaron Mekos; as well as her father-in-law Mike Wantuck; uncles and aunts, Peter and Shelley Nelson Punzo, George Mekos, Rose Mekos Hancock; cousins, Matthew, Melissa, Sarah, Heather, Jodi, Georgia, and Cory. Kara is predeceased by her mother-in-law Gail Barnes Wantuck, and grandparents, Joseph and Mary Liberatore Punzo, George and Rose Pasone Mekos. Kara was an incredible woman filled with so much love, laughter, and generosity. She was born on June 24, 1973 and immediately began leaving her mark on everyone she encountered. She was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, where she will be remembered as an All-American Cheerleader, and St. Bonaventure University where she earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Psychology. Her accomplished career was in the business and science sectors. Kara's most recent employment was with Amgen, Inc. and Intra-Cellular Therapies where she was a Neuroscience Specialist. She also served on the Boards for Soaring Capital Soccer Club, Greek Peak Ski Club, and Homeowners Association at Greek Peak. Kara's commitment to her work was second to her dedication to her family. She created a happy home, in that she provided enriching, loving, magical experiences for her children. Her wish is that they continue to be filled with love and happiness. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial, for Kara, on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 11:00 a.m., St. Patrick's Church, 604 Park Place, Elmira. Kara dedicated herself to filling the food cupboards and clothing bins in and around the Elmira area for people less fortunate than she. As a remembrance it would be fitting if you would continue to stock a cupboard or clothing bin in her memory.
