John Robert Sutton

Age 75, passed away at home on Thursday, January 4, 2024. Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, John was born in Elmira NY, son of the late John A. and Catharine Petrie Sutton. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Chapin Sutton. John is survived by son and daughter-in-law John W. and Amy Sutton of Minden NV with their sons, Matthew and Nathaniel; daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth C. and Michael Blasic of Elmira NY with their children, Adam and Hannah; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Nedra and Robert McElroy of Bath NY; nephew Sean McElroy of Bath NY.

John was a graduate of Southside High School and Corning Community College. He attended Lycoming College for a year. While at Lycoming College, John’s father passed away, at which time John came back home and finished his education at Elmira College earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

John had a nearly four-decade career with the Chemung County Probation Department. He started as an intern fresh out of college and worked his way up, retiring as the director of the department.

John was a lifelong tennis player and passed that passion on to his daughter. John was a self-taught “car guy”. John bought a 1968 Corvette over 30 years ago and over a period of time he restored the car to its original glory. Both he and Nancy belonged to the Twin Tiers Sports Car Club.

Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St. Elmira, on Saturday, January 13, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Committal prayers and interment will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads.
