Elmira: Age 76, passed away at his home, with family by his side, on Thursday, March 24, 2022. John was born and raised in Elmira, a son of the late J. Malachi and Catherine (Stout) Cain. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by daughter Catherine "Katie" Cain, sisters, Clara DeRenzo and Sister Susan Cain, RSM. John is survived by his wife of 52 years Marilyn (Guth) Cain, sons and their families: Andrew L. and Lillian Cain of San Clemente, CA with daughter Katie…John W. "Willie" and Theresa Cain of Horseheads with sons, John, Joseph and Jeffery…Daniel J. and Yada Cain of Elmira with children, Malley, Ella, Amara and Declan; sister and brother-in-law Mary Jo and Paul Minch of Big Flats; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
John taught at St. Patrick's and Notre Dame for almost 50 years. He loved teaching, the outdoors and all of his dogs. Most importantly, he loved his family.
Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Sunday, April 3, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A funeral service, led by Father John DeSocio, will follow at 4:15 p.m. A livestream of the service will be on YouTube; subscribe to McInerny Funeral Home. Interment, with committal prayers, will take place on Monday, April 4, 2022, St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery, at 12:30 p.m.
