Johanne Miles

Johanne Miles, daughter of George Dewey Miles and Florence Manning Miles, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on December 13, 2023. Born in November of 1933 in Elmira, NY, Johanne graduated from Elmira Catholic High School.

After Johanne’s high school graduation, she entered training at St. Joseph’s Hospital to become an X-ray technician. She worked in Elmira for several years, then followed her career to Syracuse, New York, and most recently, White Plains, NY, where, for 35 years, she acted as a physician’s assistant to her brother, Dr. William J. Miles.

Johanne was a devoted Catholic and faithfully supported the church and its many charitable causes. Her interests included exercise classes, yoga, playing cards and travel. Hawaii and Ireland were favorite destinations. She was fascinated by the vibrance, and energy of New York City visiting many of the museums and shops with family and friends.

Johanne is survived by her brother, Joseph R. Miles, Anaheim, CA; sister-in-law, Haven Miles, Bristol, RI; nephews and nieces, W. Scott (Regina) Miles, Ventura, CA; Debra (Paul) Desmarais, Bethel, CT; R. Douglas (Suzy) Miles, Himrod, NY; Sara Miles, Bristol, RI; cousins; Jim (Carol) Manning; Joseph (Jackie) Manning; Florence (Chuck) Moffe; Kathleen Train; Mary Alice (Fritz) Clark; Tom (Maxine) Manning; Bill (Marilyn) Manning; grand-nephews and grand-nieces; Evan (Amelia) Miles; Spencer (Ann) Miles; Maren (Brandon) Trombley; Jane (Cole) Miles-Hartman; Grace (Robin) Desmarais; Marian Desmarais; great-grand-niece, Charlotte Miles.

Family and friends will be received at McInerny Funeral Home, 502 West Water Street, Elmira, on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Johanne’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, 10:00 a.m., St. Patrick’s Church, 604 Park Place, Elmira. Following the Mass, Johanne will be laid to rest at St. Peter & Paul’s Cemetery, Elmira.
