Joe Frank Poteat, Jr., 66, passed away on November 13, 2025, in Corning, New York. Born on December 23, 1958, in Elmira, New York, Joe lived a life defined by warmth, sincerity, and an unwavering devotion to the people he loved.
Joe graduated from Notre Dame High School, Class of 1976. After college, he went on to foster his entrepreneurial spirit in the family business - Pudgie’s Pizza. He also served his country with honor as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Reserve, carrying with him a deep sense of responsibility, service, and humility throughout his life.
Joe was a kind and joyful soul—gentle, thoughtful, and genuinely one of a kind. He had an open heart, always ready to welcome conversation, laughter, or a quiet moment shared over a glass of scotch. He enjoyed life’s simplest pleasures: listening to live music, spending time with friends and casting a line into Catherine Creek on a peaceful day of fishing. Joe would seek adventure whenever possible traveling often where strangers would become friends. But above all, Joe treasured time with his family, who were the center of his world.
He is lovingly remembered by his mother Mary Margaret Cleary Poteat, brother Jon Poteat (Denise Poteat), sister Paula Roe (Kirt Roe); daughters Sara Poteat, Justine Schneider (Daniel Schneider) with his adored grandchildren, Evelyn and Henry Schneider; nieces Janaye Wall (Cody Wall) with great-nephews Camden and Carson, Danielle Smith (Stephen Smith) with great-nephews Bearett and Brock and great-niece Nellie. He is also survived by loving aunts, uncles, and countless cousins, all of whom were touched by his kindness and steady, gentle spirit.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joe F. Poteat (survived by Mary O’Connor Poteat), and beloved step-father, William Truex.
Joey’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him. His kindness, compassion, and quiet strength will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
A service will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, New York. Viewing will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a service immediately following.
