JoAnn Savino, age 88, died on December 17, 2025. JoAnn was born on March 1, 1937, the second of four daughters born to Rev. JJ Cundiff and Ora Lockard Cundiff Simmons. She is survived by her daughters Sue McCabe (Brian), Carolyn Malone (Tim McCabe), and Jennifer Robinson (Joe); stepsons Tim and Jeff Savino; as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Dorothy Wood (William) and Lois Cramer. She was predeceased by her husband Daniel Savino in 2020, her son Mike Malone in 2023, and her sister Lorene Larson in 2023.
JoAnn had two passions: nursing and family. She forged the bulk of her career at St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she rose from LPN to Adult Nurse Practitioner. This trajectory was marked by additional side jobs in private duty nursing and work at Elcor. JoAnn has the distinction of being one of the first Adult Nurse Practitioners to practice in Elmira. While at St. Joseph’s, JoAnn started the Occupational Health program, and she also won the OPPY award for her service there. Her picture still hangs in the cafeteria. After leaving St. Joe’s, she capped her illustrious career at Riverfront Medical. She was also active in several local nursing organizations and once served as President for the Finger Lakes Occupational Health Nurses.
Besides nursing, JoAnn was devoted to her family. She enjoyed holiday decorating, family gatherings and loved to cook. To her, food was love. She insisted on feeding family and friends the moment they walked into her house. She was also a woman of great faith who served as an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church with the Ladies of Welca and worked at the common kitchen.
It was JoAnn’s wish that a private burial be held at the convenience of her family.
Her family would like to say a special thank you to friend Sharon Voorhees, Dr. Keith Parker, Dr. Megan Westervelt, and the C3 staff at St. Joseph’s hospital, especially Quita “Treva,” for their patience, kindness, and love. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
