age 89, of Elmira, New York, passed away on October 4, 2014. Joan was born in Rochester, New York, on May 14, 1925, the daughter of Anna and Jeremiah Flynn. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Henry B. Rogers, daughter, Leigh Cannon, and brother, Robert C. Flynn. Joan is survived by sons, James H. (Susan) of Elmira and John A. (Elaine) of Rochester; daughter, Marianne (David) Lubin of Elmira; grandchildren, Gretchen and Meredith (Alex Jenney) Rogers, John and Lindsey Cannon, Marley and Sam Lubin, and Emma and Jack Rogers; great-grandchildren, James and Augusta Jenney; and several nieces and nephews. Joan grew up in Penn Yan. She graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor's degree from the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University. She dedicated her career to teaching for over forty years. After she retired in 1992, Joan dedicated her time to St. Patrick's Church, where she counted collection, served meals and worked at church festivals. Over her lifetime, she also volunteered with St. Patrick's Parish Council, Altar and Rosary Society, Meals On Wheels, the Junior League and the League of Women Voters. Joan was an avid reader. She had an academic curiosity and an intense commitment to her family. There will be no prior calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 604 Park Place, Elmira. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament Parish, 1010 Davis Street, Elmira NY 14901.
