Janet Phillips Marks

May 14, 1950 — June 13, 2025

Janet Phillips Marks, Age 75, passed away at the Robert Packer Hospital on Friday, June 13, 2025, following a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.

Born on Mother’s Day in 1950 to Harold and Alice Phillips, she was an immediate star, being featured in the Star Gazette, not once, but twice for this amazing feat. Both of her parents predeceased her.

Janet married her first love, Robert James Marks Jr., in September of 1970.  She lost Bob unexpectedly 5 days before their 46th wedding anniversary. She was looking forward to seeing her parents, especially her dad, and to being with Bob again.

Survived by the best sister, Elinor Saunders; daughter, Robin (Jeremy) Oakes with grandchildren Jacob and Ryan Oakes; favorite daughter, Karen Pinzone and grandsons, Massimo and Mateo Pinzone. Several nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Her trusting canine Mickey misses her as well.

Janet was lucky to find love twice in her life, and not too far from home. Her family wishes to thank her partner of the last 7+ years, Michael Butts, for the love, care and joy he brought into her life. His family was already her family in spirit, as they had been neighbors and friends for years. Mikey, Scott, Sandy, Melissa, their partners and children meant the world to her.

Janet graduated from Southside High School in 1968. She worked various jobs, ending her career with Family Services Home Care. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Murrells Inlet, SC Post #178. She was also a Life Member of the VFW Auxiliary Murrells Inlet, SC Post #10420.

A celebration of life will be held somewhere along Seneca Lake in July 2026 . Janet spoke highly of the support she received while staying at the Hope Lodge in NYC. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating money, time or items needed to the Hope Lodge, Attn: Lorraine Katt, General Manager, 132 W. 32nd Street, New York, NY 10001, a veteran’s organization, animal rescue, or North Presbyterian Church, 921 College Avenue, Elmira, NY 14901.
