Elmira: Age 80, passed away, unexpectedly, on Sunday, January 1, 2023. Jim was born in Buffalo NY and raised in Auburn NY, a son of George A. and Mary (Lennon) Snyder. He is predeceased by his brother Peter, sister Elizabeth, brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, James Caroscio, Ann Carmichael and Katherine Myers. Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years Dorene Caroscio Snyder; children and their families: Ann E. and Kevin Connolly of Elmira with children, Matthew (fiancée Katie Bohart), Abigail, and Erin…Peter J. and Robin Snyder of Roxbury NJ with daughters, Molly and Emily…Michael T. and Donna Snyder of Washington DC with sons, Quinn, Jackson, and Evan…Maureen A. and Scott Carroll of Hornell NY with children, Brennan, Owen and Margaret; sister Mary Margaret Snyder of Richfield Springs NY with wife Jane Feisthamel; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary Ellen Skipper, with Gary Bouch, Victor and Karen Caroscio, Tom and Marie Caroscio, Carol Caroscio; along with several nieces and nephews.
Jim worked for the Horseheads School District from 1967 – 2001. He started as a history teacher before moving to administration where he was a vice-principal. After retiring from the Horseheads School District, he worked as an interim principal at various locations in the Elmira and Horseheads districts, and finished his career at Notre Dame High School. Jim was a contract negotiator for NEA and NYSUT. Active in the community Jim was a mediator for the Neighborhood Justice Project and was a board member for both Holy Family Catholic Schools and Notre Dame High School.
Jim enjoyed reading and his summers spent on Keuka Lake.
Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Jim's Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., St. Patrick's Church, 604 Park Place, Elmira. Interment, with committal prayers, will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery.
