Jim, age 75, of Zephyrhills FL, formerly of Elmira, died Friday, April 3, 2026, in Florida. Jim was born and raised in Elmira, a son of the late George J. and Evelyn (Pennell) Symonds. Jim is also predeceased by his wife Margo Cokely Symonds and his beloved canine companion, Nacho. He is survived by his sons, and their families, Patrick J. Symonds of Elmira, with children, Patrick J., Merissa Mae, and Krystin Jane…Brian M. Symonds of Land O Lake FL, with Jennifer Howry, and their sons, Trindon, Parker and Cole…Brett L. Symonds of New Port Ritchey FL with Brittany Smith, and their son Clyde; brother Richard “Rick” Symonds of Elmira; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Barry and Kathy Cokely of Geneva NY, Patricia and Melvin “Doug” Lee of Elmira, and Pam Forker of Weaverville NC; along with several nieces and nephews, and his newly acquired dog, Merle.
Jim was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy. He was a Vietnam Army veteran, who was awarded the Bronze Star for his meritorious service. Jim worked as a machinist at Kennedy Valve for many years. He enjoyed camping with his family and loved being a grandfather.
Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Interment, with committal prayers and military honors, will take place on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, 12:00 noon, at Woodlawn Cemetery.
