James "Barney"
Bohland
March 21, 2026
James "Barney" Bohland was a beautiful, kind soul who always had a sweet smile and a quick sense of humor. He would do anything for anyone who needed help.
He was married to Julie Wipfler Bohland for thirty-seven years and adored his son, Ted. His family were his closest friends and he loved them dearly. Barney was a poet, song writer, musician, historian, and a great cook. He spent decades driving his classic convertible MGB around town. The car was constantly breaking down and fixing it became quite the hobby! He was passionate about social justice and he was a fierce animal lover.
He grew up in the Ithaca - Trumansburg area with his father Bernhard A.K.A. "Barney Number 1," mother Jeanette along with sister, Judie.
He is preceded by his parents and brother, Dick Gardner.
He is survived by his wife, Julie; son, Ted; sister, Judie; special niece, Kathryn Hollinger; best friends, Rick and Rita Collachcci, Lee and Barbie Griffin, and Al and Debbie Scheer; several nieces, nephews, the Wipfler family and precious cat, Ollie.
To honor Barney, please listen to your favorite music and pass kindness forward. Donations to the National Kidney Foundation would be greatly appreciated. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
