Thorner, Hugh A. Age 77, passed away at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center on Saturday, February 21, 2015. Hugh was born in Reading, PA, on August 7, 1937, son of the late John and Naomi Hahn Thorner, and moved to Elmira as a teenager. He graduated with the last class at Elmira Catholic High School in 1955 and earned a degree at Fordham University. Most of his career was spent as an industrial engineer at IBM Federal Systems Division in Owego, NY. Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Ann Sponyoe Thorner, sons John "Jack"and Nancy Thorner of Endicott, NY, with children Dylan, Lindsey and Dan; James and Beata Thorner of Tampa, FL, with children Konrad, Julia and Elizabeth; Hugh and Kelly Thorner of Endwell, NY, with children Hannah and Hugh; sisters-in-law Joyce and Harriet Sponyoe; brother-in-law Robert Kelley; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joan and Nadir Figueroa; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law John and Judy Thorner, brothers-in-law Joseph Sponyoe and John Sponyoe and sister-in-law Mary Kelley. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Thursday, February 26, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held there on Friday, February 27, 2015, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Casimir's Catholic Church, Elmira. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery. Donations in Hugh's memory may be directed to the Elmira Community Kitchen, 215 E. Church St., Elmira, NY, 14901.
