George Cleveland

Elmira: Age 85, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. George was born May 31, 1928, in Elmira, the son of George N. and Dorothea (Webb) Cleveland. He first married Dolores (Maynard) Cleveland and together they had three children. George then married Muriel (Yeomans) Cleveland who predeceased him in 1994. He was also predeceased by his sister Evelyn (Robert) Horning, brothers, Richard (Phylis) and Bruce, grandson Donald R. Cleveland. George is survived by his brother E. William (Bertha) Cleveland; sister-in-law Bette Cleveland; daughter Barbara A. Cleveland with Dr. Earl Robinson; sons, Daniel J. Cleveland with Tina Emery, Gary L. Cleveland; grandchildren, Deanna (Brian), Salina (Nathan), Daniel (Melinda), Teddy (Eileen), Josh (Sonya), Travis (Kathy), R.J. (Sarah) and Jeremie; along with several great grandchildren, extended family members and friends. George L. was a proud veteran of the U S Army serving during World War II. He grew up in Chemung County and at a young age started working in his parent's grocery store, George's Market, on Water Street. George learned the meat cutter trade and worked at Swift & Company, as well as several supermarkets in the area, where he was the Meat Manager. In retirement George traveled the United States, taking scenic photos and creating rock art sculptures using the handle "By George". He was a very devoted family man who was caring, kind and generous. The quote that best describes him is "He was a friend to man and lived in a home by the side of the road." Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 6:15 p.m., followed by Military Honors. The Cleveland Family extends a special thank you to the 6th Floor staff at the Chemung County Nursing Facility for the wonderful care George received.
