Ed died, January 12, 2022….after a fierce battle with lung cancer. The Marine Corps motto "Adapt & Overcome" served him well. Ed was born in Elmira, NY on 7/19/47, the third child of Edward L. & Mary Kolanach Carpenter. He attended Elmira City schools, graduated from EFA 1966 & CCC 1968.
Ed enlisted in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam conflict & proudly served his country from '68-'70. He was honorably discharged with rank of Sgt. Upon discharge, Ed joined the family business, Leupelt's Photoengraving, as an apprentice, journeyman, master photo engraver & partner with his brother, Rick. Ed & Rick served the Elmira business community for over 25 years. Ed continued his support of family & community through his work at Eastern Metal/USA Sign, Elmira College & as coach for many years with Tom Sawyer Youth League.
Ed was an original & life-long member of EJ Brewer Marine Corps League, a member of Vietnam Vets of America & a communicant of Most Holy Name of Jesus/ St Mary's Parish, Elmira.
Ed was pre-deceased by his parents, brother & sister-in-law Ronald J. & Connie Bushman Carpenter & many special aunts & uncles. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Susan Wylie Carpenter, sons, Brian M. Carpenter and wife Kate, Horseheads, NY with Ed's beloved grandsons, Patrick & Connor; Todd W. Carpenter with Jessica Segal, Fishkill, NY; sister Susan M. Carpenter Niver, AZ; brother & sister-in-law Richard & Roseanne Sassano Carpenter & nephews, Ron, Jeff, David, Rob, Kevin & Michael.
Throughout his life, Ed enjoyed fishing at his favorite spots including Keuka Lake.
He was a true & loyal NY Giants fan with their great successes & painful failures. But his greatest pleasure was being the #1 cheerleader at Patrick's & Connor's athletic/ performing arts events. Ed was the quintessential "fixit man" with many accomplishments over the years - altho' Murphy's Law was often a factor. But always, at a successful conclusion, Ed's
comment would be "Damn I'm good!" Yes, you are, Ed.
