Diane Elizabeth Woodhouse's Obituary

Diane (Chapple) Woodhouse, 79, of Elmira, entered into rest on April 1, 2026.

She was born on October 15, 1946 in Niagara Falls, NY, the second of six children born to the late Hugh and Julia (Peton) Chapple.

Diane was a graduate of Lyndonville High School. She received her Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from the University of Akron and a Masters degree in Library Science from SUNY Geneseo.

She married Mark B. Woodhouse, of Elmira, in July 1978.

After graduating from Geneseo Diane was a children's librarian with the Elmira City Schools, working at Fasset and Broadway elementary schools among others. She loved reading to the children and inspiring in them the habit of reading. Diane also used her art training to create posters and illustrations from familiar children's books to decorate her library. She retired in 2003 finishing her career at Pine City School.

She was also an Assistant Teacher in the Hidden Treasure Program at Light on the Hill Retreat Center near Van Etten, NY.

After retirement Diane turned to watercolor painting. She became an accomplished watercolorist and belonged to the Elmira Regional Art Society exhibiting frequently in the Southern Tier.

In recent years she also enjoyed hiking in the many beautiful spots nearby, Tanglewood Nature Center being a favorite.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Mark Woodhouse; her brothers and sisters, Patricia (Noel Rowe) Wright of East Setauket, NY, Ted Chapple of Avon, NY, Christopher (Maureen) Chapple of Los Angeles, CA, Glenn (Kimberley) Chapple of Pittsford and Eileen (Chris) Scoville of Honoeye Falls, NY and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A celebration of Diane's life will take place at Tanglewood Nature Center, 443 Coleman Ave. Elmira on Sunday, May 17, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
