born October 29, 1933 in Corning, NY, to Maynard and Alice (Hogue) McLaughlin, died peacefully on Monday, August 1, 2016, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine (Richard) McLaughlin who he married on September 28, 1957; loving children, son Daniel Joseph McLaughlin (Dr. Shelia Cassidy) of Fleming Island, FL, daughter Michelle Niles (Rick) of Elmira, and daughter Doreen McLaughlin (David Johnson) of Coraopolis, PA; two beloved grandchildren, Nathan and Megan Niles, both of Elmira; siblings, Ann Fennell (Matthias) of El Paso, TX, Maynard "Mac" McLaughlin (Marilyn) of Shoreham, VT, Sheila Reeder of Pittstown, NJ, Catherine "Kate" Bassney (Richard) of Rochester, NY, Alice McLaughlin of Horseheads, Elizabeth "Libby" Dolan (James) of Sayre, PA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marianne Norton (Joseph) of Indian Trail, NC, Tess Richard of Henrietta, NY, Joseph Derito of Elmira, Henri Richard (Ann) of Durham, NH, and Louise Kent of Rock Hill, SC; along with forty-one nieces and nephews. Dan is predeceased by his brother-in-law Pete Richard, sister-in-law Leonie Derito, niece Katie Kent, brother-in-law Donald J. Kent, and brother-in-law Richard Reeder. Dan was a U S Marine Corps veteran. He was a 1951 graduate of Corning Northside High School. Dan was the first employee of Smith, Langhans, & McLaughlin, a company partially owned by his uncle Tom McLaughlin. Dan later became vice-president of Keuka Construction Corp. He started his own business, Dan McLaughlin Construction Ltd., in 1975, years later transitioning to McLaughlin Roofing Corp. Dan ran his company until selling it in 2005. The business is now known as McLaughlin-Phillips Roofing Corp. Dan was a long time member of the Elmira Country Club, serving as its president in 1994. He and Cathy enjoyed their winters in Florida where they were members of Heritage Palms Golf and Country Club in Fort Myers. A strong supporter of Catholic education Dan and Cathy started the Holy Family Sweepstakes, were on the original committee that started the OLL Festival and he was instrumental in getting new tennis courts at Notre Dame High School. Dan was a long time communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira, on Friday, August 5, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment, with committal prayers and military honors, will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations in Dan's memory be made to either, Notre Dame High School, 1400 Maple Avenue, Elmira, NY 14905 or Holy Family Catholic School, 421 Fulton Street, Elmira NY 14904. The family appreciates the care given to Dan, over the years, by Dr. Roger Schenone, and more recently, Dr. Gonzalez, the VA administration, Home Health Care Services and the nurses and staff at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, 4B.
