"Joe" Age 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 4, 2017 in Horseheads. Joe was born in Syracuse a son of Carl J. and Mary Elizabeth (Gooley) Sorgenfrei. He was predeceased by son Carl J. Sorgenfrei III and sister Winifred Byrne. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Mary (Hurley) Sorgenfrei whom Joe had known since he and Mary attended kindergarten together in Syracuse. He is also survived by children and their spouses, Anne E. Swanson of Plantsville CT, Ed and Donna Sorgenfrei of Land O' Lakes FL, John and Deana Sorgenfrei of Melbourne Beach FL, Mary and George Nava of Chula Vista CA, Ellen and Joe Keller of Camas WA, Daniel and Kyra Sorgenfrei of Melbourne Beach FL; sister Mary Kearney of Syracuse NY; brother and sister-in-law, Malachi and Rose Sorgenfrei of Georgetown TX; 14 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and in-laws. Joe was a graduate of University of Toronto where he was the kicker for the football team. After earning his undergraduate degree Joe enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Korea . He continued his military service with the Marine Corps Active Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Joe earned his Masters of Business Administration from Cornell University. Joe and Mary transitioned to Elmira when Joe took a job as a financial estimator for A&P. After the closing of the A&P plant Joe went to work for New York State Corrections from where he retired. Joe was an avid runner who could be seen running all over the Elmira area. He ran both the Boston Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC several times. Joe was an avid golfer who enjoyed passing the love of the game on to his sons. He was a longtime active member of St. Casimir's Church. Joe was a member of the Edward J. Brewer Marine Corps League and served on the military honors detail for years. There will be no prior calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Casimir's Church on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Committal prayers, with military honors, will follow at Woodlawn National Cemetery. Those wishing may remember Joe with a donation to Alzheimer's Association, 435 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester NY 14620.
