Betty Williams

October 12, 1933 — March 4, 2018

Age 84, passed away peacefully at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center on Sunday, March 4, 2018. Betty was born and raised in Pittsburgh PA. She was a daughter of the late George F. and Ruth Gangware Boyle. Betty was predeceased by her husband Walter E. Williams and brother George F. Boyle, Jr. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law J. Scott and Martha Williams of Elmira; grandchildren, Nancy L. (Esmiralda) Henderson of Urbandale IA, Mary E. (Darin) Finnerty of Macedonia OH, Michael S. Williams of Pittsburgh PA; great grandchildren, Eva and Benjamin Henderson; sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Raymond Istenes of Allison Park PA; sisters-in-law Linda Boyle of Galion OH and Norma Williams with husband Herb Watts of Ashtabula OH; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty earned her registered nurse degree in Pittsburgh before going on to Temple University in Philadelphia to earn her certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. She worked for many years in the nursing profession at various health care facilities. Betty moved from Pittsburgh to the Elmira area 15 years ago to be closer to her family. Since that time she has been an active member of the Westside United Methodist Church and has been greatly involved with various church activities. She loved to play the game of Bridge and was very talented at cross stitching. Betty was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, on Friday, March 9, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Holly Strickland conducting the service. Betty will be buried with her husband Walter. A graveside service at Mount Royal Cemetery in Glenshaw PA will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Those wishing may remember Betty with a donation to Westside United Methodist Church, 743 W. First Street, Elmira NY 14905. The Williams family would like to offer a special thanks to her Westside United Methodist Church family for all the love and support they have given to her over the years.
