Barb, age 89, passed away at her daughter’s home on Thursday, August 28, 2025. She was the daughter of Edwin and Elizabeth Eagleson Banfill. Barb was predeceased by her husband Michael M. Palmieri, brother Thomas Banfill, brother-in-law Malachi Palmieri, sister-in-law Margaret Palmieri, and nephew Ritchie Palmieri. Barb is survived by daughter and son-in-law Deborah E. and Sean Eagen of Elmira with their daughters, Rebecca E. Eagen of Elmira and Jennifer N. Eagen of Brooklyn, NY; son Michael D. Palmieri of Elmira with his children, Eddie (Erica) Palmieri of Elmira and Ameigh Palmieri of Elmira; great grandchildren, Ava and Camden Roberts, Mia and Lillian Palmieri; brother-in-law Joseph Palmieri of Elmira; several nieces, and countless friends.
Barb grew up on Elmira’s Southside. She attended St. Mary’s Grammar School and was a 1953 graduate of Southside High School. Barb went on to earn her degree as a Registered Nurse from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing and continued at St. Joseph’s Hospital for several years. Barb then changed careers as one of the original employees of the Chemung County Office for Aging and continued with the agency until her retirement. In retirement Barb was back to St. Joseph’s Hospital where she became a longtime volunteer. Barb was also very active with the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing Alumni.
She was a devout Catholic and a lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s Church. Barb was a member of the Ladies Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Knitting and researching her ancestry were her favorite hobbies. Along with her husband Mike, she enjoyed their trips to Walt Disney World in Florida and Boothbay Harbor in Maine. They cherished their times at the Pioneer restaurant and the Hibernians. Mike and Barb were very devoted to each other.
Family and friends are invited to call at McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira, on Friday, September 5, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 10:45 a.m., followed by an 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, 224 Franklin Street, Elmira.
Officers and members of the Ladies Division of the A.O.H. will meet at the funeral home on Friday, September 5th at 5:45 p.m. to conduct a service for our sister, Barb. Signed, Mary Bernadette Ryan.
