Shields
Elmira: Age 78, passed away, Saturday, July 16, 2011
at the Bath VA Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family, after a long
battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Bob was
born in Elmira
on July 17, 1932, son of the late Peter W. and Katherine (Creighton)
Shields. Bob is survived by his loving
wife of 48 years Patricia Kane Shields.
Together they raised five children; Ellen S. Piasecki and husband Joseph
of Myrtle Beach SC with children Nick and Emily Samuels and Olivia Piasecki;
Martin A. Shields of Omaha NE with children Jarrett and Amber Shields; Kristen
M. Osburn and husband Edward of Elmira with children Casey, Eddie and Allison
Osburn; Joseph P. Shields and wife Lauren of San Diego CA with expectant son
Hudson due in two weeks; Bridget S.
Nugent and husband Neil of Elmira with children Joseph, Luke and Ellie Nugent;
great grandson Emery Shields; brothers and sister-in-law, Peter and Mary Shields
of Wellsville NY, Jack and Terry Shields of Horseheads; several nieces, nephews
and cousins. He was predeceased by his
sister Margaret Betts. Bob was a U.S.
Navy veteran serving during the Korean War.
He retired from Hardinge Inc.
After retirement, Bob stayed active volunteering for nine years with
Meals on Wheels and helped build seven homes for Habitat for Humanity. Bob was a devout Catholic. His greatest pride and joy was the time spent
with family. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W.
Water and Walnut St.,
on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held there on
Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at
10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church. In
recognition of Bob’s service with the Navy, military honors will be accorded at
the end of the funeral mass. Bob’s
family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the second floor staff of
the Community Living
Center at the Bath
VA Medical
Center whose love and
