John P.
Cherkis
Elmira: Age 89, died Sunday, January 2, 2011 at the
Chemung County Nursing Facility. John
was born March 21, 1921, the son of John and Anastasia Cherkis. He is
predeceased by his son John T. Cherkis and sisters, Sophie Page and Stella
Conklin. John is survived by his wife of
55 years Lena Caroscio Cherkis; children, Ann Cherkis, Mary Cherkis Donahue,
and Joseph Cherkis (Jennifer Corrao), all of Elmira; grandchildren, Christopher
Cherkis, Christin (Eric) Bresett; great grandson Caleb Bresett; sisters-in-law,
Mary Maio, Dorene Novick and Edith Caroscio; several nieces and nephews. John was a WW II veteran having service with
the U.S. Coast Guard. He worked at
Remington Rand for over 30 years before going to work at the Elmira
Correctional Facility from where he retired.
Growing up John enjoyed playing basketball. He enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid
fisherman. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home,
corner of W. Water and Walnut Sts., on
Wednesday, January 5, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral
home on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 11:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of
Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul Church. Military honors will be held at the
conclusion of the funeral mass.
Interment will follow at St.
Nicholas Cemetery. John’s family would like to extend their
sincere thanks to the 5th floor staff at the Chemung County Nursing Facility
for the wonderful care provided to John the past 5 plus years.
