S. John Cherry
“Jack”
Elmira: Age 96, passed away Friday September 16,
2011. In following his wishes there will
be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes
Church on Thursday,
September 22, 2011 at 10:00 a.m.
Private committal prayers will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will provide flowers. Jack graduated from Newark College of
Engineering at the top of his class in Electrical Engineering, did his graduate
work at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and was a member of the Honorary
Society, Tau Beta Pi. He had a number of
managerial positions at Westinghouse, had 20 patents and received the
prestigious corporate award “Order of Merit”.
Jack was co-founder of the local society of the National Quality Control
Society. He was chairman of the National
Quality Standards Committee for Electron Devices. Jack was a member of Toastmasters for many
years, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Community Kitchen. His wife Doris, son Bill, and brother Gene
predeceased him. Survivors are sons,
Jack Cherry of Memphis NY,
Dr. James Cherry of Virginia Beach VA, and daughter Barbara Brearley of Queensbury NY;
along with 6 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
