Frederick Bailey
Passed
away Thursday, July 29, 2010, as a result of an unexpected illness. Herb was a loving husband, father, grandpa,
great-grandpa and pop-pop. He was born
in Columbia Township,
Bradford County, Pennsylvania
on October 1, 1930, the son of Helen Naylor and Peter Bailey of Elmira. He was predeceased by his brother Perry
Bailey and sister Lillian Schwab. Herb
is survived by his loving wife Patricia Combs Bailey; sons, Kenneth (Roxanne)
Bailey of Sidney, MT, Curtis (Molly) Bailey of Pine City; daughter Kathleen
Carleton of Henrietta, NY; grandsons, John (Randene) Bailey, Ethan (Ashley)
Bailey, Donald James Bailey; great-grandson Bohden Bailey, all of Sidney, MT;
granddaughters, Whitney and Rachel Carleton of Henrietta, NY; step-daughters,
Robin (Carl) Holmqvist of Bangor, PA, Vicki (Michael) Cooke of Stroudsburg, PA;
step-grandchildren, Ciarrah and Jordan Holmqvist of Bangor, PA, Olivia, Annika
and Tyler Cooke of Stroudsburg, PA; sister Shirley (Erling) Orke; sisters-in-law,
Donna Chapman and Mary Lou Richards; special niece Carol (Richard) Adams;
nephews, Harold (Bonnie) Bailey, David (Diane) Bailey, and their families;
along with several other nieces and nephews.
Herb proudly served his country, from 1947 – 1952, in the U S. Army and
the NY National Guard Co. E. He attended
the Monterey Army
Language School
and was then stationed in Germany
where he was a Russian translator. Herb
was Superintendent of General Crushed Stone Company in Horseheads, retiring in
1994. At one time in his life Herb
learned to fly airplanes and became a flight instructor. He enjoyed boating and was a member of the
Watkins Glen Yacht Club. Active in local
organizations, Herb was a long time Rotarian and was proud to have been named a
Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a
lifetime member of the Watkins Glen Elks Lodge, a member of the Horseheads Old
Oak Lodge #364, Horseheads American Legion, Arnot Sportsman Club, Arnot, PA,
and the Wheel Inn Club, Roaring Branch, PA.
Herb loved to hunt, taking several trips out west to hunt in Montana with his son and
grandsons. After retirement, Herb and
Patricia traveled all over the country.
He loved woodworking, building model airplanes and taking care of his
home and property. Herb had a wonderful
sense of humor and a positive outlook on life.
He was a self-made man, rising above the adversity he experienced as a
child. Herb will be missed by all who knew him. Friends
are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of Water and Walnut Sts., on Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00
p.m. A funeral service will be held at
5:15 p.m.
Officers
and Members of Horseheads Old Oak Masonic Lodge #364, will gather at McInerny Funeral
Home at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 1, 2010 to conduct a service for our
brother Herb.
