George A. McConnell
“Bud”
Age
95, of Scotia, NY,
formerly of Elmira, died Monday, January 25,
2010 at Baptist Health Nursing &
Rehabilitation Center. Bud was born November 10, 1914 in New York City, the son of
George and Catherine (Gallagher) McConnell. He is predeceased by his wife Dorothy Sweeney
McConnell and niece Irene C. Hinks. Bud
is survived by his sister, Grace T. McConnell of Schenectady, NY; stepchildren,
Michael J. Sweeney of Albany, NY, Gerald E. Sweeney of Cohoes, NY, and Jo Ellen
Sweeney of Elmira; nephews, Steven G. Berninger and William C. McConnell;
nieces, Catherine B. Kukan, Constance G. Boler, and Eileen M. Taylor; along
with 6 grandchildren; and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Bud was a dedicated and heroic fireman, for
the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) for 28 years, retiring in 1966. Friends
and family are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of Water and Walnut Sts., on Friday, January 29, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00
p.m. A prayer service will be held at
the funeral home on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass
of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Elmira.
Interment will follow at St. Peter & Paul’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bud’s name
may be directed to Catholic Relief Services, c/o Catholic Charities, 40 North Main Avenue, Albany, NY 12203.
